Polypharmacy is taking 5 or more pills every day. More than 59% of adults over the age of 20 are taking at least one prescription, with increases in the number of pills as the adult ages. By the time adults are 40 years old, they are taking 5 or more pills every day, and by age 60 adults are taking 10 or more pills.
It has become the answer to all of our problems. Pills are made to look good, taste good, and make us feel good. As obesity grows, so does the need for pills to control high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and gastric reflux.
The drug companies are making the drugs and making money. The doctors are making money with the annual doctor visits. The cost of health care is rising from this cycle of drug production.
There are other ways of feeling better every day. Less stiffness and more energy can make the day more pleasant. Non-pharmacological methods can be shared by a nurse specialized in fitness & nutrition & medications. #StopMedicationAbuse is my campaign to help others take less medication and feel better every day.
