National Seafood Month October 2018

October is National Seafood month. Why is seafood so important to have an entire month, not just a National Seafood Day? Seafood is the answer to health.

Seafood contains Omega 3 healthy fatty acids. Since your body does not produce fatty acids, they must be obtained from food sources. Omega 3 fatty acids lower triglycerides, cardiovascular diseases, depression, arthritis, asthma, ADHD in children, and helps vision and neurological development in infants.

Seafood also provides a great source of protein. This protein packed food builds and supports healthy muscle. This high energy food makes a difference in your ability to move with ease.

Seafood contains essential vitamins and trace elements. These include B vitamins, vitamin D, and selenium. These vitamins provide your body with energy, fight infections, help to protect bones from osteoporosis, and help your thyroid to function.

Some have suggested sources of fish contain harmful PCBs or polychlorinated biphenyls. These PCBs are manmade chemicals to make manmade materials. Harvard University studied PCBs in foods and found vegetables have a higher content of PCBs than fish. It is recommended for ALL to eat vegetables and fish. https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/203640.

One serving of fish provides 110 calories, 20-25 grams of protein, and 2.5-5 grams of fat. Saturated fat of 1 gram is found in seafood and is the correct portion of healthy Omega 3s to Omega 6s. Omega 6s are unhealthy saturated fats found in all foods and should be eaten in lower proportion to the healthy Omega 3s.

Seafood Nutrition Partnership is promoting seafood during National Seafood Month. Use #Seafood2xWk to find activities supporting seafood in the diet. The recommendation is 2 servings of fish every week as part of a healthy life style.
