Is health in our genes, environment, or lifestyle?

You are here: Home / Heart Disease / Is health in our genes, environment, or lifestyle?

September 16, 2015 by Mary Ann Wietbrock 1 Comment

We are all aging differently. Our rate of aging depends on many things including our genetic makeup, our environment, and our life style. We can alter all of these. Yes, even our genetic background can be altered. We do not have to wait for the heart attack or cancer our parents had.

We are concerned for our health but do we truly understand how to manage our health? It is well know that an unhealthy life style leads to heart diseases, strokes, and diabetes. Madlen Davies just published an article on how a poor diet is the biggest cause of early death. Americans were found to have the highest body mass index in the world. Does that surprise you?

There is now a new category of diabetics. Adolescents and young adults are now being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. This is what our parents got when they got older. As we age, our pancreas is not as effective as when we were younger. But now, our kids are getting this condition. Is it genetics, environment, or life style?

We can work on many different goals to reduce the harmful effects of our genetics, environment, and life style. Which works the best? All of them may have some benefit, but until we put the entire picture together for our bodies, we cannot make the difference to reduce our diseases. Start with one and add more as time goes on.

New York City is starting with soda’s. Researchers at the Columbia University in New York City found they could reduce obesity and cases of new diabetics by raising taxes on soda’s. When they raised the tax on soda by 1 cent per ounce, they reduced obesity by 1.5% and new diabetics by 2.6%. So where is your money going?

Do you enjoy your food when you are eating it? Do you enjoy how you feel after you eat? These are two different aspects of eating. Eating till your full and then enjoying a nap is a frequent habit Americans enjoy. Did you exercise before you ate? If not, your metabolic rate was slowed and you gained weight from the calories.

The list of commonly abused drugs is growing. It was just updated August of 2015. See the reference list and look up the drugs you may be taking on the list. Are we using these drugs to make us feel better? A percentage of our youth are also taking these drugs. Narcotics and prescription use is on the list for 12 graders.

How do your manage your genetics, environment, and your life style to prevent chronic disease for you and your family? How do you manage fitness and nutrition so you feel good and get through your day to day business without fatigue? A wellness coach certified in both fitness and nutrition can help individuals and businesses grow and age well together. You can enjoy the life and grow your pocket book to a ripe old age.
