February is the annual month to celebrate healthy hearts, started by Vice-President Lyndon B Johnson in 1961. A healthy heart is defined by a lack of heart diseases and includes a normal blood pressure less than 120/80.
The number one cause of death in the US is death related to heart diseases. Heart disease tops all cancers and accidents, and all other causes of death. Heart disease kills over 2300 people every day of every month of every year. Over one million will die from a heart attack each year, every 33 seconds. By the time you finish this article, at least one American will have died of a heart attack
There is good news. Heart disease is preventable. Healthy hearts are possible, no matter what your family history or environment is. Each person has the opportunity to live a healthy life. Studies have shown 42% of Americans put effort into improving their heart health. So, 58% of Americans are not working on healthy hearts.
